I visited the repair shop today. They said they had tried the SSD in an external holder, and got nothing. I left an old standard hard drive for them to install in the iMac for now. I collected the SSD and brought it to the office and stuck it in an external hold. The icon appears on my desktop. I tried the Disk Utility on it, but the volume then ejects with the error it was improperly ejecby Billiken - Tips and Deals
QuoteSATA voodoo. Maybe cable came loose, which can cause those symptoms. What happens when they reinstall the old ssd? They say they dropped in a standard hard drive, and could boot without a problem. So I have the option to deliver them an old HD from my stocks for installation, or buy a new SSD to put in. I don't know which is better, as I wouldn't want to go through this again in aby Billiken - Tips and Deals
Last week my iMac (mid-2011) froze while using Firefox. I had to force boot it. But on restart I get the startup chime, and then a white/grey screen. Nothing more, no Apple logo. At home I tried: *command+R recovery mode *boot in safe mode *boot from backup disk *boot in target mode *reset PRAM *boot from pen drive with installer In every case, no luck. It always stops with the whiteby Billiken - Tips and Deals
QuoteI've been waiting on a package from the UK. Finally emailed and they said "On its way. Keep an eye out!" I wrote back that I'd love to, but how can I without a tracking number? "Oh, apologies. It was shipped Royal Mail, and they have no tracking." Enough to make me want independence... Royal Mail does have a tracking service. The problem is, that USPS charges foreigby Billiken - Tips and Deals
Cold War-era technology, still in use on the Polish railway! Interesting video: The Last Pragotron "Lodz. Here, the most modern Polish train station, Lodz Fabryczna is getting its final touches. Meanwhile, just a few kilometers away, at Lodz Kaliska Station, original Pragotron-made information system is still operating. Fully mechanical, with operating puch card interface. We have Lidl where I live in Poland. I really like them. They are very similar to Aldi in the USA--mostly just the basics, mostly their house brands. However, the quality is good and prices are low, and here they have many weekly promotions: Mexican week, Asian week, Workshop week (tools), etc. They also have a good wine section. Having never been in NYC, I don't know the situation. If that's the case, it shouldn't be a problem.by Billiken - Tips and Deals

I'm a US citizen, so I have a SSN. The E51 will work in the USA, as I've used it on previous visits (it picked up T-mobile and AT&T networks). Frankly, I thought it would be much easier than this. Here I can buy a starter kit and SIM from any of the major carriers even in a news kiosk!by Billiken - Tips and Deals
It's a coast-to-coast trip, starting from NYC and ending up in SFO. First chance to buy anything will probably be in Michigan or Ohio, as I'll have only about 24 hours in NYC before leaving on Amtrak for the Midwest.by Billiken - Tips and Deals
I will be flying to the USA (from Europe) in a few weeks for a 3.5-week vacation. The rates for roaming in the USA are very high, so I plan to take along an old unlocked Nokia E51 and buy a SIM card in the USA so as to have a temporary number there and be able to make and take domestic US calls as necessary. (There will be a lot of moving around and needing to coordinate with people.) Can I geby Billiken - Tips and Deals
I am the owner of a travel agency in Europe specializing in rail travel. A Eurail-type pass is almost NEVER a good value these days. If you have a set itinerary, prebook single-journey tickets and you'll be far ahead. Such passes are an especially bad value for travel in France, where supplements are required and must be paid for. Further, the number of places for Eurail pass holders is lby Billiken - Tips and Deals
I recently wanted to bid on something on ebay.de (Germany), and I saw the the seller didn't accept PayPal. I looked at other Germany listings, and many didn't accept PayPal. I thought this was an e-Bay requirement?by Billiken - Tips and Deals
QuoteYour routing sounds like you're flying United/SAS and/or maybe Lot. UA's terminal at IAD is old and kinda sucks but the SAS terminal in CPH is very nice with good shopping and eating. WAW is, well, you know: Very Cold War. Warszawa Chopin airport is perfectly modern: Warsaw airport new terminal photosby Billiken - Tips and Deals
You'd have no trouble getting checked in at that time in Warsaw. Just let the hotel/hostel know of your planned arrival time. Finding a hotel near the central railway station might be a good idea, as that's the hub for all the night busses, including the one from the airport.by Billiken - Tips and Deals
You might want to re-think the Eurail Pass... The folks at Trip Advisor recommend avoiding passes and booking point-to-point tickets through the sites of the various European rail companies (NOT through Rail Europe!). My own experience has also shown this method to be much less expensive.by Billiken - Tips and Deals
I have lived in Poland for the last 10 years. You'll have no problem getting around with just English, especially in the larger cities and popular tourist sites. Since the low cost airlines started flying in here some 4-5 years ago, there are loads of tourists, especially from the UK, so language is NOT a problem. Here in Central Europe (Poland), McDonald's coffee is pretty good. They have machines which grind the beans and make the coffee when it's ordered, so there's no old coffee that's been sitting in a pot. The cappucino is ok, too. (Last time I looked, they were using beans from Tchibo.) When in Budapest earlier this year, I saw a number of "McCafe" outlets attached to normal McDonald's.by Billiken - Tips and Deals
I came into the office last night and noticed the smell of way-too-hot electronics. My QS 2002 1ghz-Dual was locked up, and the the smell was definitely coming from that machine. After leaving it turned off all night, this morning I booted it with no problems. However, looking in the case, I see that the main case fan is running, while, after 20 min. of operation, the power supply fan is not rby Billiken - Tips and Deals
Looking for advice.... (from Poland) In April, I convinced a friend to buy a MacBook. This is not an easy task here in Poland, where Windows PCs are the norm, and it's very hard to find Apple products. However, I did a good sales job, and he broke down and bought the MacBook in a local computer store (the only Apple product they had in stock). And he was very happy. For about a week. I'm going to be visiting the USA (Adrian, Michigan area) for 2 weeks this month, and I'd like to find a cheap dial-up service to use while there. I'd like to pay once and get either a month unlimited, or XX hours, and not have to worry about cancelling, repeating billing, etc. Any recommendations? Thanks!
