Thanks for the advice, all. I've installed Prey as well as Find My Mac. In addition I've also enabled a firmware password so that the computer can't be started up from an install CD, external disc, or in single user without knowing the password. Here's hoping we'll never need to use any of the above.

Find My Mac: Any advice? - 9 years ago

My son bought a new MacBook-r for his first year of high-school. I want to set up the Find My Mac feature for him on iCloud. Anybody have any experiences or advice on using this? Anything to watch out for? Are there any 3rd party apps that do the same thing that you like better? Thanks all.

My son is starting high school in September and wants a MacBook for school. He's pretty sure that he wants a built in optical drive, so that eliminates the Retina display. I've advised him to get more memory, at least 8 GB. He's been working hard this summer and has saved a bit over $1K. I could probably throw in some extra if needed, up to 2 hundred. He can get a refurb from Apple for $929. I
