Your preferences don't "work" because the links are really links to a new window that loads the referenced URL, not links to another site in the regular sense. You'd need an option to not open new windows to stop the behavior. One (old-school) workaround would be to command-click the links to open in a tab. Works for all links, not just other sites.by MEG - Tips and Deals
>whenever I DL an .mpg file it's huge and not nearly as good in quality or sharpness. >Mpg type files take up a LOT more space to achieve the same quality as .avi files. You're confusing the avi container with the encoded content within it. The movies you are downloading are more than likely divx or mp4s that are put into an avi container for broadest acceptance. Strange, I ordered a bunch of stuff (flash drives, DVDs, CDs) the night of the original deadline (10/31?) and been getting a package or two a day since last Friday which is really surprising me considering your experiences and since it's mostly media mail for the DVDs and CDs. Still waiting on two things but it's been less than the quoted 7-8 (business) days for shipping.by MEG - Tips and Deals
I think I had a similar problem a while ago -- I remember the same "show recorded 3 days ago is fine but last night's isn't and cable looks fine but Tivo doesn't" scenario). Fixed mine by either doing a reset or shutting down the Tivo, letting it rest for a little while then plugging it back in. PS - Sam probably thinks you've got a direcTivoby MEG - Tips and Deals

Having to make an appoint for the Genius Bar is going to depend on how busy your local Apple store is. I know the one in Pentagon City, VA is typically booked so you can pretty much never get a walk-in appoint (and the last two times visited, they weren't accepting any more appoints that day). Unfortunately, one of the side effects of selling more Macs is going to be more people wanting to visitby MEG - Tips and Deals
>Some places have taken the risk of not well cooked beef pretty seriously. Sometimes it's not genuine concern about the consumer's risks of eating undercooked beef per se. But rather a mandate from the local health department after a sub par inspection that they cannot serve anything but well done until they clean up their act. I interpret any place that says we can only cook the burgerby MEG - Tips and Deals

Quotemlfrank One question I have is if it is possible to turn the LCD off while still having the computer on? <snip> Am use to a seperate monitor - what you say sounds good enough though Whoa, hold on there. I think Michael's intention is to use the iMac with an external monitor with the built-in screen off. If that's what you were wondering Michael, it's a no. Adobe just released a public beta of their new Soundbooth application (a modern SoundEdit if you will). Interesting thing is it's going to be Intel Mac only: The company is offering the solution for Intel-based Macs only, saying that "Apple is quickly moving its focus towards Intel Macs, and no longer sells Power PC systems in many places. Unless it's a position that requires expert/advanced knowledge of Photoshop, go with "Experienced with" blah blah blah. While the other suggestions may be more accurate as to your skill levels, in the hyperbole of resumes, phrases like "familiar with", "working knowledge", etc. read like "someone showed me how to do something in PS and that's all I know".by MEG - Tips and Deals
While walking through the woods a man comes upon another man hugging a tree with his ear firmly against the tree. Seeing this he inquires, "Just out of curiosity, what the heck are you doing? "I'm listening to the music of the tree," the other man replies. "You gotta be kiddin' me." "No, would you like to give it a try?" Understandably curiouby MEG - Tips and Deals
If you only travel once a day (there and back) in mostly non-peak hours from Arlington or CC, it will probably be cheaper to buy as you go (we are talking like $20 vs $32 for the pass). However, I'd probably just go for the 7-day pass because there's no worrying about only one-metro trip a day, adding fares, peak hours, etc. Just hop on the train and enjoy your time here. Here's another case alternative. It's not as cool looking as the OWC case and no firewire but it is under $50 and it is super quiet (I've got one):by MEG - Tips and Deals
1) burn audio CD and re-rip as MP3 2) Create project in iMovie and add protected-AAC as soundtrack. Export audio-only MP3 and import into iTunes 3) Roll the dice with Hymn/Harmony/etc to strip the DRM and convert to MP3.by MEG - Tips and Deals

The system specs have changed with the latest revision. The NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 (default card in the early G5 towers) is now supported so it'll run on a factory dual 1.8 G5 now. Won't help Sam's son-in-law though For reference, here's the system requirements from Apple: One of the following Macintosh computers: Mac Pro Power Mac G5 with a 1.6-gigahertz (GHz) or faster PowerPC G5 proby MEG - Tips and Deals
I'll be waiting for the combo update but the incremental update is available via Software Update now.by MEG - Tips and Deals
That's the card I was referring to (and is the card in the barefeats link). I forgot about the other version (which is funny cause I've got one in my rev A dual 2.0 G5). Keep the XT in your G5, you won't see any improvements with the other flavors of the 9600 (the OEM cards from Apple or the retail Mac/PC version). You're gonna have to jump to a Radeon 9800 or X800 or Nvidia 6800 to see anyby MEG - Tips and Deals
I thought you were gonna refer to the contradiction that if it wasn't used since he had it/never used, how'd it get scratched?by MEG - Tips and Deals
No. While it has more memory, the 9600 Pro is only a 4x AGP card rather than the 8x the 9600 XT is. Performance is roughly equivalent between the two but the XT edges out the Pro in pretty much everything. If you were upgrading to the 9600 family from a lesser card, I wouldn't fret between the two too much but if you've got the XT, don't bother with the 9600 Pro. Here's a link to some barefeaby MEG - Tips and Deals
Looks like they loosened the hardware requirements a bit. I noticed my 1.6GHz G5 with GeForce FX 5200 Ultra now meets the system requirements . I don't think either the Mac nor card made the cut previously. Cool. Also noticed the RAW support has some additions also (FUJI S2 and S3 among others).by MEG - Tips and Deals
For existing customers, the Aperture 1.5 update is free. That's nice. Supposed to be available this week I think (the google translation says "The update is to appear still in this week "). Looks like it was an Aperture only event. For those hoping for updated MB/MBPs, there's always next Tuesday... Update: Apple's site is updated for Aperture 1.5:by MEG - Tips and Deals
So far, here's the scoop on aperture -- no word on availability or upgrade pricing yet... - images can be stored on DVDs or other media - previews are shown in high quality even if they are stored on DVDs/"offline" - Aperture Library can be used in media browser of iLife/iWork (iDVD for ex.) - open API for example for the online ordering of images via internet (through non-Apple sby MEG - Tips and Deals

For most folks entering the realm of digital photo editting Elements is good enough. The big differences to me are Photoshop gives you "better" tools including curves, color balance, match color, layer masks and a quick mask (I haven't seen the latest version of Elements so if some of these have been added to Elements, my apologies in advance).
