Weird memory issues with G5 tower - 18 years ago

Let me know if I am missing something here. I have three dual G5's. I have finally added ram to my person dual 2.5. I tried first premium 1gb sticks from a local computer shop. These were PC3200, but were designed for overclocking in PC's, came in a little wooden box etc. I think the brand was OCZ. Anyway, worked but showed up as 512MB sticks, not 1GB ones. Next ordered a pair of 1GB OWC

You need to download the CS2 RAW to DNG converter and convert all of your NEF files to DNG, then CS can open them. You need 3.2 or 3.3 in order to read NEF files, depending on the camera model. You need CS2 to use ACR 3.0 or later. BTW, $149 for bridge and the rest of the new CS2 features is a bargin, the time savings dealing with RAW files is worth way more then $149 Jon

From what I rememberm the 1.33 upgrade card works in 100 and 133mhz G4's. It's just that I went from 604e class Macs to Quicksilvers, never had anything in between so I am a little in the dark as to what all of those Graphite and Blue Power Macs were and what they featured. Whats the oldest, cheapest G4 tower I should look for. I already have a dual 1.33 G4 card, hard drives with PCI controllers, 6 512MB PC133 DIMMS, DVD burners, 4Ti video card. So can I grab an old 466 bare box somewhere? Scan Ebay for a single 533? How far back can I go? Thanks Jon

Well, no luck. I tried removing the battery, holding down the PRAM button for a minute or so, pulled out both OWC ram chips leaving just the Apple one. On a positive note, I had no issues getting an RMA to send the Giga card back. So Now I need to find a basic Mac tower to replace the one that was killed by the card. Jon

Thanks for the tips. I will check the pins, but the new CPU card seemed to drop into places very easily. The firmware did seem to go properly, giving ne a yellow screen and then booting itno a normal OS X, which was the last time it booted. I will check the pins and remove the Pram battery, hold down the PMU for a minute or so. I did try pressing it but just for a second or so. Thanks

Problem with CPU upgrade - 18 years ago

Tried to replace the 867mhz single G4 card in my Quicksilver with a dual 1.8 card. Did a firmware update and then replaced teh CPU card. Nothing, the machine would not boot, chime or anything. Everything powers up, drives, fans etc. but no chime, no video. I tried putting the stock processor back in but nothing. Any ideas? Thanks Jon

I think you can set permissions (Get Info) for the whole drive to read only, or none, then get info for the folder you want to share and alter that to read or read & Write

The MIni does say uses PC2700, but the chips I have been pulling out are marked Samsung PC3200. The first pair is working well in a dual 1.8.

I have one pulled from a Mini and I want to pair it up with another one to put in a Dual G5 tower. No one seems to sell the 256 Samsung. The Apple store can order it, but at $59, $10 more then a pair of 256 OWC sticks and more then a Samsung 512MB DIMM Any one have one laying around? Anyone have ideas on where to find one? Thanks Jon

I run Gig ethernet in my office, movine large photoshop files all day long between 4 machines. I use two as servers and workstations and the others are just workstations. 100base seems good for perhaps 7MBps while 1000 runs solid at about 25MBps. Also, a good switch is faster then a cheap one. The USR 24 port I have is 30% faster then the Linksys 4 port models I have. Jon

Putting the camera on TOP of your fridge can;t relly cause any damage, but storing consumer based DSLR's UNDER your fridge will likely damage it. If your storing your camera under the fridge I would suggest a pro level DSLR like the Canon 1D series or Nikon D2x or similar Nikon model. Jon

Canon Rebel, 20D etc use the same as 35mm EOS canon cameras Nikon D70, D1x, D2x etc, use the same Nikon lenses, although some older lenses have limitations with the latest cameras. I have found that G5's are picky. I have a pair of 1GB OWC generics that cause my dual 2.5 to crash. From now on I try to find Samsung ram to match what Apple uses. Jon
