As per my earlier thread about my wife's iMac issues , I am now having an issue with using her backup drive as the startup disk for my son's MacBook. To review, I had a clone of my wife's internal hard drive from her iMac G4 on an external Firewire drive. I cloned it to another external Firewire drive, formatted my wife's backup external drive and then cloned her system and data back to the oriby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
QuoteDoc Intel Macs don't need to boot from a drive with a GUID file system. They can boot from APM volumes. The only problem that I've encountered with APM volumes on Intel Macs is that firmware updates might not work when booted from an APM volume. I thought I read the APM volumes would not boot an Intel Mac. I am doing an Archive and Install of Leopard on the external drive, as Iby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
I was going to update the OS on the backup using a Leopard install. Will that work?by magicmikey - Tips and Deals
I've formatted the hard drive on the iMac. I'll go ahead and install a new OS on it and see if it runs stable that way. If not, I'll know it's a hardware issue. I decided to go the long way on the external drive. I am cloning it to a GUID formatted external Firewire drive. When it's done, I'll format my wife's backup drive using the MacBook so it will be GUID and then I'll clone her system bacby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
My wife's iMac G4 (700 mHz, 256 MB RAM, OS X 10.4.11) started having real problems a couple of days ago. It started freezing up completely and having kernel panics on a regular basis. I ran Onyx to do some maintenance and it reported that the hard drive failed. I used the OS X installer to run Disk Utility and repaired the drive. I then reran Onyx and cleared out caches, etc. The problems continuby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
I bought a refurbished Acer Aspire from CircuitCity.com and I had no problems. Shipping was only $1.99 and the $219 price was the best I found on the Aspire model I bought.by magicmikey - Tips and Deals
Thanks. I may have installed it with Daylite, which I tested out some time back. Michaelby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
I opened my system preferences today and noticed there was something called OpenBase. I clicked on it and OpenBase Security opened up. I'm not familiar with this and did a find on my Mac to see if there was an OpenBase application. I found OpenBaseManager and OpenBaseSetup. I didn't download this directly so it must have installed with something else I've installed. Anyone know what commonly usesby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
Thanks for all the input. I don't think his games take nearly that much processing/video power. He's been able to run them on his cousin's inexpensive Toshiba. If I'm going to spend more than $600, I'll buy a MacBook for him. (That's what I would do if I had enough extra cash.) The PC is just to buy some time until I do step him up to a MacBook.by magicmikey - Tips and Deals
QuoteJEBB I'd suggest trying to find one of the early G3 Clamshell iBooks but one that has Firewire. It should be able to stand the abuse a child would give it plus, being so colorful, it may make him very popular with his friends. They can be dual boot and there are a lot of games for Mac OS9. Thanks but those will not handle the games he plays. He needs something with a much more robust vidby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
QuoteKen Sp. Buying a child a PC instead of a Mac might be considered "child abuse" I agree! That's why this is so hard for me to do. His cousin, also 11, has had a PC laptop for 2 years and my son plays on it all the time. Since his games (and comics) are online, he's only using the Internet and there isn't much of a difference in using the PC vs. the Mac for that. It's justby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
My 11 year old has been really begging me for a laptop. He mostly plays online games and basic word processing. I've been holding off on it because I just can't justify the expense of a Mac laptop. We only have been using Macs in the house, although I'm reasonably familiar with PCs. I'm considering buying him a cheap PC for now and when he gets closer to high school buying him a MacBook (or whateby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
Wow, the original file (several generations ago) was made in PageMaker and it was only 445 KB with the logo and text on it! Oh well, I guess I just haven't paid attention to that before. Thanks, Michaelby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
I decided to make changes to simple InDesign CS2 document I have. It has an EPS logo (B&W) and text on the page. When I exported it to PDF, I noticed it was a considerably larger file than the earlier version. I did a "save as" on the InDesign file to see if it would reduce it but it didn't trim it down much in size. I decided to recreate the file to see if I could get it smaller. I am running a MacBook 2.4 GHz with OS X 10.5.6. I have a Dell 20" monitor connected to my MacBook and both the MacBook's display and the Dell display have been profiled with an i1 Diplay2. All of my applications look good on both monitors except for Adobe Bridge CS3. If I put Bridge on the Dell, the color is very yellow - red. If I pull it back to the MacBook, it looks correct. Thanks for all the info. It looks like it may actually just be an issue with this one DVD. Although it plays fine in regular DVD player, the MacBook doesn't like it. I've tried a half dozen other DVDs and they all worked find. I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks, again. Michaelby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
It might help the Postal Service get more business if they were more efficient! Lately, they've been screwing up a lot with my mail. For instance, I got a delivery tag that I had a Priority Mail letter that required a signature. It said it would be redelivered the next day. I made sure I was home when the postal carrier got there. No letter. I showed him the tag and he said "I guess it's stiby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
My MacBook (last of the white case MacBooks - 2.4 ghz) may need to be repaired under warranty. The Super Drive is giving me some problems. Sometimes, it doesn't recognize a CD. Today, it wouldn't recognize a commercial DVD. It kept spinning and then spit it out. It did this twice but the DVD works fine on my regular DVD player. Thanks for the suggestion but my ISP was of no use. They suggested I contact Apple about the Airport Extreme Base Station. Michaelby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
My son just purchased an XBox 360. He hasn't bought the wireless adapter for it yet (although I may let him use my Linksys Broadband wireless router I just replaced with an Airport Extreme Base Station.) In the meantime, he has connected the XBox 360 to his MacBook with an Ethernet cable. (Found this info on the web.) He configured everything as per the instructions he found but it still reportinby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
Eureka! I finally got it to work. The one thing I had not done was to restart my Dell 3100cn. When I did that and printed out the settings report, I now had a new IP address for it. I added the printer in the system preferences, typed in the new IP address and it worked! Michaelby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
Robert, I used my Dell 3100cn with a Linksys wireless broadband router for nearly three years. The Dell is indeed Mac compatible. It's just that Dell has absolutely no support for the Mac. What seems to be occuring is that the AEBS is not communicating with the Dell and, therefore, the IP address is not being set by the AEBS DHCP server. (As I state above, the Dell still shows the address sby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
Let me begin by wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! Now, I just acquired an open box Airport Extreme base station. I was really excited about all the possibilities. Little did I know I would have so many issues trying to get it configured! (I had less trouble configuring my Linksys wireless broadband router.) The key adjustment came when I manually set the Airport Extreme to Channel 11. (Iby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
I've just migrated my files and settings from my desktop Mac to my new MacBook. The desktop Mac was using Tiger (10.4.11). The MacBook is using the latest version of Leopard. I am looking at purchasing a brand new Apple MacBook (2.4 gHz, 2 GB RAM, SuperDrive - it's the last generation white one.) In order to buy it, I am considering selling my G4 iBook and my Dual G5 tower. I have a Dual 1.8 mHz G5 tower with 2.5 GB of RAM and 300 GB hard drive. The G4 iBook is the last ibooks made - 12" with a 1.33 mHz processor, 1.5 RAM and about 5 months of Applecare left.by magicmikey - Tips and Deals

At this time, I'm not really set up to use web server space but I'm really just trying to figure out what causes this. Since Thunderbird works, I can switch over to using it for occasions that I run into issues but that's not the most convenient way to do it. Since I mostly deal with PC users and I have three that are not receiving my attachments (out of 48), it would be preferable to use one emaby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
A few days ago, I posted of my issues with attachments from Mail.app 2.1.3 not getting to PC users. See here: I resolved it by going using Thunderbird to send out my emails with attachments. My question is does anyone know if the attachment issue would go away if I upgraded to OS X 10.5 and got Mail.app 3.xx? I haven't upgraded from Tiger to Leopard as I didn't really see the need. My first result with Thunderbird was successful. I sent an email with a PDF attachment to the first person who reported not receiving my attachments coming from Mail.app. I was unable to find any way to get him to receive the attachments using Mail since May. When I sent him the PDF through Thunderbird, he got it the first time. I used the same PDF I tried unsuccessfully to send him using Mail.apby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
Quotedavester Oh, one more thing...you do have the "send windows-friendly attachments" box checked by default in Mail.app, right? Sure do. I actually downloaded Thunderbird before I even posted here but I hadn't got a response yet from those I sent an attachment to. As I mentioned above, I had read several posts on other forums of people having issues with Mail.app attachments that diby magicmikey - Tips and Deals
