I've had a .Mac account for 5 or 6 years now, and it's time to renew. However, I find I'm using it less and less. I have 4 macs in 3 different locations that I need to keep syncronized. I use to be a big fan of iDisk, but that was way too unreliable, so I replaced it with Foldershare. I like the .Mac email account, but there are way too many free alternatives out there for me to worry aboutby Billybob - Tips and Deals
There are a lot of interesting Ebay auctions. While selling my iMac, one seller stated, "I paid over $1700 for this system new, so I'm setting my reserve at $1200, which is reasonable." Setting his reserve at $100 more than the market top, this seller, obviously, hadn't reviewed the recent iMac sales data. A question for Ebay experts: what is the point of a reserve? I recently sold a used iMac G5 2.0 with maxed-out memory. Prices for iMacs sold about that time ranged from mid $800s to about $1100 with mine selling for just over $1000. While I'm sure I broke some of Otto's rules (e.g., too much info), the most important variables (more important than iSight, MHz and memory) were software followed, distantly, by AppleCare. The problem is that there isn't anything between the iMacs and the towers (I know, there are a half-dozen threads on this topic). I never was tempted to buy a G5 Tower. There never seemed to be enough of a value differential over my MDD. Now, the 2.67Ghz with an Ed. discount looks reall sweet to me. I think I will pull the trigger.by Billybob - Tips and Deals
I starting taking it about 10 years ago and notice significant improvements. However, I also started taking grape seed extract about the same time. GSE has Pycnogenol as the active ingredient. This antioxidant is the same stuff in red wine and pine bark. Anyway , I stopped taking glucosamine, continued the GSE and haven't looked back. But YMMV.by Billybob - Tips and Deals
Witch is wonderfully customizable, but you only need one set of commands. The command-tab sequence is reserved by the system (or LiteSwitch) for application switching, so I use Ctrl-Tab for window switching. In the Witch preferences, the first line, "All applications" allows you to switch through all open windows including those in the dock. I like iClock. It has an application list that identifies which programs are running under Rosetta. It also does a 100 other things, some more useful than others YMMV. I have both Launchbar and Butler loaded. These utilities ar both UB. You only really need one of them. I still like Launchbar as an application loader, but I use Butler to control iTunes. Witch is a great window switcher.by Billybob - Tips and Deals
It took me over 5 months to get my land-line number ported. I hope you have better luck. Meanwhile, SR has been working great. Quality is 80-90% of previous service. I get an occasional dropped call (2-3 a week). However, the savings is more than worth it.by Billybob - Tips and Deals
I'd go for it. I doubt that Apple will speed bump the iMacs because that would lessen the distance from it to the professional offerings. The other thing to note is that you can upgrade the iMac processor, so you are not "stuck" with first generation cd technology. In addition, historically, it's unlikely that the low-end of the new offerings will sell for less than $1699 (probably $by Billybob - Tips and Deals
Aapl looks pretty damn good long term. It will run Windows simultaneously (using Parallels) and it is not inconceivable that it might eventually be able to run Windows apps without Windows! People are getting sick of Windows' security problems and bloat. MS is a disaster right now with no indications of a turn around. Aapl is well positioned to take advantage of all this. I recently transferred settings from my g5 iMac to my new iMac CD. Everything transferred find including all the Foldershare settings. Too my chagrin, I now have 2 iMacs with the same Foldershare name. I've tried renaming one, but it renames the other. I've changed the name but in settings (local) and on the website. The iMacs are in two different locations, so I haven't had them both rby Billybob - Tips and Deals
"This is EXACTLY why the Intel PowerMacs... err... Mac Pros, are the LAST model being brought to the Intel fold." Your argument sounds really neat, and I'm sure that it's at least partially true. But, correct me if I'm wrong, aren't Intel's professional dual core chips, the ones destined for the Mac Pro towers, still unavailable? I had a similar problem with the Gizmo. I have a Airport Extreme wireless server connected to my router. When I put the Gizmo inbetween the APE and the modem, speed dropped. So, I put the Gizmo behind the APE. I have a network switch connected to the APE and my printer and the Gizmo connected to the switch. It works for me! Be sure that modem is VOIP ready. << Evidently, there is someone at SunRocket named Carrie who handles the local number porting. She would have been the one to call to get your transfer sped up.>> That would have been good info. to have. One glitch in the process was a freeze on my number at BS put in to prevent LD carriers from stealing the account (I don't remember the technical term). SR didn't tell me thisby Billybob - Tips and Deals
When I switched my cell company, it took one hour to transfer the number (and about 40 minutes on the phone to get the first bill corrected). Well, my request to transfer my landline number to SunRocket finally went through -- after only 5 months. I can finally say goodbye to BellSouth and their $21/month for basic, basic service. I had a couple of other snafus with sunrocket (e.g., $0.20by Billybob - Tips and Deals
I think that the issue with the Intelminis is that there is no dedicated video memory, so the video speed, in most cases, is slower than the G5 minis.by Billybob - Tips and Deals
The reboot part is the turnoff for me. I like to keep my Mac running 24/7. If it's an either-or proposition, I'll just keep using my IBM laptop via RDC. For most purposes, that is already at 90% speed (with the notable exceptions of copy, paste and video).by Billybob - Tips and Deals

I have it, there have been many headaches, and I'm thinking about cancelling. Of course YMMV. My biggest problem is that they promise number portability. Well, I am in month 5 now and they still have not ported my old LL number over. I had horrible quality problems when it first started. It turns out that SR is very finicky about your cable modem. I really Like Path Finder. I have been using it for several years. I think it use to be called SNAX. It always had better functionality than the finder. The biggest knock was that it was slow and used a lot of system resources. I used it as Finder helper rather than replacement. It still suffers from feature bloat. However, the latest version is so much faster that I don't worryby Billybob - Tips and Deals
Yeah, This configuration looks like state of the art 2001 or 2002. P4 2.2? Do they still sell P4s that are slower than 2.8? I think a minimum configuration for a custom PC should be Athlon 64 3800+ or P4 3.2 200-250 GB hd and a 256 MB video card. This configuration can be had for probably as low as $450-$500. Otherwise, go with a Dell or HP.by Billybob - Tips and Deals
It would be rarer still here in N. Florida. It's about 65 now with an expected high of 70. The sun is a little intense, but you get use to it.by Billybob - Tips and Deals
Update to TB 1.5? I haven't been impressed with recent releases, but they can't hurt. Deleting TB preferences might also help. There may be something screwed up in there.by Billybob - Tips and Deals
I looked at it this morning and it was at $71, and I was certain that there would be little chance that my $69.75 limit order would get filled today. I glanced at it a few minutes later and it's at $68.80! What happened? Did Apple lose a big law suit? Did they recall the new iMac?by Billybob - Tips and Deals
It's been mostly in the 70s for the last couple of weeks and has hit 80 a couple of times here in Northern Florida. That's even too warm for us! It looks like allergy season may come early this year.by Billybob - Tips and Deals
I'm not a finance expert, so my explanation is likely an oversimplification, but it really isn't that crazy if you consider that the stock price is really the market's expectation of future profitability. If the company does as expected, then the market's expectations are accurate and the price shouldn't change much. It's only when these expectations change that the price changes.
