Thanks, mik. That link to macrumors did the job. I made the files visible, found the file "/.VolumeIcon.icns". I did a getinfo on it- it had an unknown ownership and read only status. I changed that to the owner's user name, changed the status to read/write, made the files invisible again (using Onyx) then copied and pasted the custom icon. Bingo!!

Good thought, I just tried that, but no go. Really weird. I made an alias of the drive and the icon pasted just fine over it. It also pastes over any other file or folder I've tried, but not the HD icon.

I just upgraded my friend's eMac 1GHz machine. I cloned his old drive onto a new one and put that drive into the eMac. It had a custom icon, I tried to paste a different custom icon over that one, but instead the drive lost its old custom and now displays the generic disk icon of OS 10.4.11 (Tiger). I'm using it on three Macs under 10.5 and have had no glitches at all. I've been using it since it's recent re-release. Macbook C2D 17" Intel iMac 20" Intel iMac Nice to have it back & running.

Why finally after all of this time post a blog pice that appears to be throwing in the towel (further ticking off the customer base- I was one who got one of their cold replies) and then turn around and release something. All kinds of mixed signals here. Can the software and developers really be trusted? They may have a problem with future sales on new sales or charging for a future upgrade.

One thing I've noticed in Safari- folders in the bookmarks bar are faster when they drop down and icons are instantaneous. I used to watch them draw anytime I'd click on one. Don't know if that is a Safari update or the graphics update, etc. I know it tends to be a joke, but I sincerely mean that things do seem quicker on my MacBook than before I updated.

Not sure of the OS- whatever shipped on my FatMac. I bought it used in 1986- a Macintosh 512Ke, an enhanced version with greater ROM and an 800K floppy. I think it might have been System 3.

I bought the iWork 08 package but want to share it now with my 2 sons. Is there an upgrade path to move from the single user version to the family version? I really don't want to pay for the whole package again, but to pay the difference between the two would be nice. Anyone know or have experience with such a thing?

Thanks, I appreciate the help. I am using a WEP password. Looking for an AP monitor, but I haven't stumbled on anything. I'm pretty new to AP and networking- not well versed on the lingo and procedures, but I've had Macs since my 512Ke fatMac back in '86. We've come a long way! Fortunately Apple makes most of it almost automatic. Guess I'm just a little paranoid since 5 other wireless networks

I thought the cleanup routines ran at midnight or some such time. My Mac is almost always asleep at that time. Do the routines find other extended downtimes on their own to run?

I thought about indexing, but the Mac had been idle all morning and it is not a new install by any stretch of the imagination, with no recent upgrades, etc. I'm just a little concerned. How can you tell if someone is accessing (other than those who are already in the household)?

So, I got on my iMac (Intel Leopard- connected via ethernet to a newer AP Extreme). No one else in my household was on the network. Things were running slow. I fired up Activity Monitor to see what was going on. A process called "find" was running and taking 50%. I had not initiated a find command. Why was it running?
