Ok, I was casually reading an article about Apple laptop batteries, cycle counts, power usage, etc. They recommended looking at Activity Monitor to see what was using power. Well, I took a look and found an activity running at 97-99% cpu process. It's called xmd-stak. I Googled it and found it appears to linked with crypto mining. Not all that familiar, but not something I knowingly am particby celliott - Tips and Deals

I have nothing USB2 attached to anything going to the hub or the pcie- card, USB2 hub shows up with the usb3 hub attached and both disappear when the hub is detached. I dunno.by celliott - Tips and Deals
No devices plugged into it when I did the report. But now I have a usb 3 stick and an SD card plugged into the hub. Both report as being USB3, but there is still a USB2 Hub that shows up. So, when the hub is connected it shows up as a USB3 Hub and a USB2 Hub. When I disconnect it and do a refresh of the report both the USB3 Hub and USB2 hub disappear. They both reappear when it is plugged in. Butby celliott - Tips and Deals
I bought this hub some time ago from Amazon and have been using it with a USB3 card in my 2010 MacPro. For the first time I did some investigating. I have 4 devices connected to the USB3 PCI-E card. When I did a check on About This Mac->System Report, 3 of the devices report as USB3 up to 5 Gb/sec. But this USB 3 Hub comes back as a USB2 Hub Up to 480 Mb/sec. Not sure why. Any thoughts? Good discussion. So hard to upgrade Macs sometimes. I decided to nix the whole thing and went with a NewerTech MAXPower 4-Port USB 3.1 Gen 1 PCIe Controller Card from our sponsors. Hope this does the job. Doesn't need additional power and I don't need to any gymnastics trying to route a cable from the optical bay (not to mention the cost of cables and adapters). It has been an interesting study.by celliott - Tips and Deals
Sorry to have dropped out of the discussion I started, but it was New Year's Eve and all. thanks for all the input. Onamuji- looks like a possibility to me. Here is another one. Looks like they support Dell desktops. Don't know anything about the pin outs. Grim, your solution looks good, only problem is that I see no way to route the cables. Apple leaves very little in the way of holes,by celliott - Tips and Deals
Already have one of those cables, so didn't need to search for it. Need to go from that to a SATA power end. That's what I'm currently working on. Thanks. The 6 pin cable has a male end. My sata power cable is 6 pin male on one end with sata power on the other end. Not sure there is a female/female adapter to join the two male 6 pins together. As I look things in my search- perhaps I haveby celliott - Tips and Deals
Apple ATI Radeon video card. Only uses one power connector. Not sure about a power splitter off of that. I don't have one. MacPro is an expandable, form factor, but not easy at all. Typical of Apple, they use a bunch of none standard stuff such as the power port on the mother board. I'm still working on it, but it appears the only good way is to tap into the optical drive power lines. Even thaby celliott - Tips and Deals
never mind. I had forgotten that the Mac Pro does not have a standard sized 6 pin power connector. I've also come to the realization that running the power from the optical bay is going to be a problem since the connector is one piece- combo data and power connector. I can't even figure out how to draw power from there. All of my drive bays are full, so I can't come off one of those either. Whatby celliott - Tips and Deals
I am adding a usb 3 card to my 2010 Mac Pro. It requires a power cable. I have adapters to split off the sata power line with the optical drive, but difficult to run the cable down to the card. On the other hand, I have an open power port on the motherboard right near the card. I have an adapter that goes from 6 pin power (to the mother board) with sata power connector on the other end to attby celliott - Tips and Deals

Worked for me- 10.13.1. That's crazy.by celliott - Tips and Deals
All boxes checked. still can't search for anything. I think I'm giving up. I've tried every suggestion plus a couple I made up and nothing works.by celliott - Tips and Deals
Thanks for the tip Onamuji- however, that didn't make any difference. I did exactly as instructed by you and a procedure I found online. Still nothing. Search on mail still returns no results. this is crazy.by celliott - Tips and Deals
I am using Apple Mail 11.1 on High Sierra. Search function returns no results. I've done some research and tried a couple of suggestions but nothing working so far. Here's what I've tried so far: - removed three files beginning with "envelopes" in ~/user/library/mail/v5 (I also have a v2 and a v4 folder. Relaunched mail) - launched mail. Highlighted the mailbox, went to Mailbox menuby celliott - Tips and Deals
A word of warning after you downgrade. Be sure and turn off auto updating. Apple has that on by default. I hadn't used my Apple TV for a few days until this morning when the grandkids came over and wanted to watch a movie. Apple in all of their supremacy had upgraded me back to 11.1. I quickly went back in after again doing the downgrade and turned off auto updating. They aren't going to get mby celliott - Tips and Deals
I did the same thing. I couldn't find any way other than buying a USB C cable that I had no other use for. I might have missed another option, but that's what I had to do.by celliott - Tips and Deals
Tried everything noted above and some others. Only thing that worked was to do a reset and then set it up again. I'm guessing that means there is some sort of cache in the ATV itself. All seems to be fine at this point. Thanks for the suggestions.by celliott - Tips and Deals
Just wondering if someone had an insight on fixing the problem or at least may have some insights into the problem: When I view the movies list on my Apple TV 4, the list shows the wrong artwork for each movie, though the other metadata is correct- some of the artwork isn't even a movie, some are tv shows, some are music album artwork etc. Thing is, they appear correctly on the Mac server. I just did the very same thing. The new TV OS was slow and I hated the interface but I decided I'd get used to it. Then I did that small incremental upgrade and it broke my wireless connection. I couldn't get it to connect to my Mac Pro server. Suddenly it connected, but then every time I went to play movie content it told me there was an error. Never did get a movie to play. Yep, same thing here in Illinois. Super slow access to most websites. Does seem to be back to normal now. doing the slow down I did a speed check and it all seemed good. Not sure what that was all about. Looks pretty wide spread.by celliott - Tips and Deals
Had some comments, decided not to continue the discussion. Thanks for the input.by celliott - Tips and Deals
C(-)ris- says you. Why? It's my drive, my work flow. Do it your way while I do it mine. Only now Apple seems to want to take more charge of telling me what to do and how to do it. Apparently so are some people. Why so dogmatic and rude? Feel free to put your "crap" where you want to.by celliott - Tips and Deals
rz "You should only have permissions to write to your folder under Users." Why? Because Apple wants it that way? Sometimes I don't want to dig to save or open on files that I don't intend to hang onto. And I hate to clutter up my desktop. Just a personal thing I suppose, but that's my preference. And like I said, up until now I have been able to do it.by celliott - Tips and Deals
I've been saving to the root level of my boot drive all along. I can save to almost anywhere else as far as I can determine. But when sharing files I will often just drag from one Mac to the HD of the other Mac. Can't do that anymore without authenticating. If I create a folder at root level and drag it to the desktop, no problem. Try to drag it back and it won't go without authentication. Mayby celliott - Tips and Deals

Just installed High Sierra on my Mac Pro mid 2010. When I try to copy a file to my boot drive, it always asks me to authenticate as an administrator. One more hassle. So I did the old Get Info on the drive and went to give myself permission to write to my HD. It asked for my password (under my user name) and Unlocked the disk. I hit the plus sign and up popped "Administrators" and "by celliott - Tips and Deals
