RgrF. I think it is a software issue and not hardware. I had a similar problem on an earlier OS (now on Ventura OS 13). It's been a while so I don't remember the exact cure. Smoke means clutch, belt or least often, motor. Motor problems along with smoke usually pop the breaker. For this to suddenly happen suggests something got stuck and is binding the tub, preventing spin. Not many folks have an email address registered with the USPS in the first place, so getting that message in an email should be a red flag. Then check the sender's actual email address by clicking on the little down arrow at the end of it. If it is not from the USPS, you know it is phishing.

Also drop a couple of nuggets of softner salt or rock salt down the drain, then some boiling water. Do this periodically. If it still backs up, suck out as much water as you can and repeat the process. If the toilets and sinks all drain as they should then the problem is between the laundry drain and where it meets the main drain from the house.

deckeda, Home Depot, Lowes and even ACE hardware sell foam insulated covers that fit underneath the cover for the switch or outlet. I put them on all outside "fixtures" in our house for the same reason you see. It even makes a difference in how often the furnace runs.

deckeda, The thermocouple is flaky, acting like a teenager. Replace it. However, with the age of that heater, I'd replace the whole unit with another standard gas unit. It will still work if/when the power goes out, as there are no electrical connections.
