Rick-o, where was this couple of seconds of pain you described? Location. Where did it originate? Even when a very small stone, barely visible to the eye, emerges from kidney and starts a long, agonizing, bloody path from the very narrow channel, the ureter (where the pain is, in your back where your kidneys are, not your front, and not your bladder) it definitely doesn't last only a moment.

They say if you are fortunate enough to capture the stone for inspection they can determine if it's calcium or (whatever the other kind is) and the information can be somewhat useful. Most stones, if I remember correctly, are calcium. And this is ordinary. The Elgato HD box you linked in your first post can work, but first you need a cable box with analog outputs such as component or composite. I haven't thought to look at my Comcast HD Cable Box to see what kinds of input/outputs it has. I'm not hopeful, but I'll look. Thanks!

There are more solutions listed as for PC's running Windows. If in the end, it's still taking analog, then it doesn't matter what kind of 'solution' it is. And if I got EyeTV software, I wouldn't have any reason to go looking for some pc-centric 'card' or extra hardware or buy a windows machine, or run windows on a mac, if none of them are decoding encrypted digital cable signals. It's been several (okay, quite a few) years since I used one with a Mac, mine was an El Gato, and it worked okay. What's good these days?
