Ironically, the thing that has made China the threat they are is their embrace of capitalism. Centrally-managed, perhaps, and possibly not indefinitely sustainable in that fashion (e.g., currency manipulation). But for now, China is in the catbird seat.

Complicated, and taking it as late as possible is not always the best for maximizing total dollars collected. Also, for couples, when one dies the other gets the larger of the two benefits. In my limited experience, fans are pretty straightforward replacements. A few screws, a bloody knuckle two, and it's done--as far as the physical replacement. The second hurdle is connecting it to power and control, if its not a perfectly matching plug-in harness, you may have to wire-nut or solder, and take care to match wires.

I'd set up the 60x spotting scope that was mentioned. Barring that, I would get the binoculars with the largest objective lenses/aperture I could, to gather as much light as possible. The advantage of binoculars is their ability to gather more light. At binocular sizes, magnification is going to pale compared to a scope no matter what you do.

There are days when I wish the governments would end support for public broadcasting, just to no longer have to hear conservatives incessantly whine about it. National level PBS, big city stations and the marquis content producers would probably be fine, but I'm sure the local stations and small production companies would feel the pinch much harder.
