We don't get David Letterman here across the pond but I did watch the various links posted. If he's have a said something along the lines of "Good job it wasn't Bristol at the ball game as in the 7th inning.... I would have assumed, perhaps wrongly that he was talking about the daughter that was accompanying her parents on this trip. Was it during the first Gulf war that Iraq was shelling Israel with exocet missiles? They showed remarkable restraint then. The US gave them an assurance that if they didn't retaliate, which could have made the whole situation worse, they would be taken care of. Considering the way that this recent conflict has been handled they are entitled to feel uncomfortable. Yes they are sabre rattling,by bernadette - 'Friendly' Political Ranting

I think I've already stated this. It was not the Presidents place or responsibility to ask the Queen to this commemoration. If I remember correctly The President and First Lady have already met the Queen. And the Queen put her arm around the waist of the Presidents wife. I've never seen the Queen appear so open and affectionate to someone not of a Royal family. So I don't think her Majesty hasby bernadette - 'Friendly' Political Ranting

Heads of state are usually personally invited to these events, their respective governments are usually left to deal with the details. The Queen was present for the the 60th anniversary of the invasion in 2004, the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales all attended commemoration events in France. Since then GB has sided with the US, against the wishes of the EU (France and Germanby bernadette - 'Friendly' Political Ranting
Quotebillb Call me insensitive. It's time for new friends. I'd be happy they're in a place where thier chances of staying sober and not killing themselves or someone else are much slimmer and let it go. AA may not be a cure, per se, but it keeps some people alive. <When can they just live their freaking lives?> It should be obvious, they now are. Laarree, that particular book enabled me to see things a lot clearer. not just about AA, you can apply it to a lot of other organisations. Getting a clearer picture of how groups function enabled me to apply it to quite a few social situations. Glad to hear you came through ok, lots don't. I'm so grateful I was one of the lucky ones. Ok Kraniac, I'll take your last post as a starting point. You feel pissed off because the friends that you feel you supported whilst they were drinking have let you down now they're sober. They're still friends, they just have different needs now, and are geting them met elswhere. Yes, I can totally see how you would feel let down. Alcohol was their coping mechanism, and unlike a lot of peoplby bernadette - 'Friendly' Political Ranting
As a couple of people have already explained, AA is a complete social network. If the problem is with your friends letting you and others down, well that unfair of them, and maybe you should remind them that with sobriety comes honesty. But your first few posts here were quite specific. You seemed to want to get as much dirt about AA as possible. For what purpose, only you know. But if you arby bernadette - 'Friendly' Political Ranting
As I've already stated, recovery is an extremely personal thing. My response to you was only one opinion of AA. There are thousands, possibly more, who would disagree with me. Some people have strong support systems, as I have, others are not so fortunate, AA seems to suit them. But my post was not written to prove you right and everyone else wrong, as you seem to believe. QuoteRobert M Bernadette, The posts made by both you and Kraniac reminded of a couple of links about religion vs cult. Here's one that comes to mind: Here's how they define the difference: "A religion is a movement in which people find themselves; a cult is a movement in which people lose themselves. A cult hijacks your identity and makes you into someone you aren't. A true reliby bernadette - 'Friendly' Political Ranting
Charles Bufe wrote a book, "Alcoholics Anonymous: Cult or Cure". He determined that AA was not a cult, but that some parts of the program were cult-like. The reaction he received from AA members over his book caused him to re-think his conclusions and decided it was, indeed, a cult. ... I've left all of the info in, including the link. It's what's known in AA and NA as "thirteen stepping" the "twelve steps" being the programme you work. Having attended years of AA and NA meetings I have to agree with you, it is a cult. If you look up the definition of the word "cult" you will see there is a striking resemblance. It uses the same practises that a cult uses. It uses a philosophy and has very rigidby bernadette - 'Friendly' Political Ranting
The US is usually part of a multinational force in most areas of conflict. The way you talk it you would think the US stood alone in all of them. I think you'll find that was GB from 1939-1942. If you consider the size of the UK in comparison to the US of course you are going to have more soldiers. You have a larger population from which to enlist them. I wonder if you looked at the percentageby bernadette - 'Friendly' Political Ranting

Quotevoodoopenguin Trying to make sense of some of the numbers. According to that Google map that was linked to below somewhere the numbers are Obama - 349 and McCain - 162.
