I just did the something looking for a Firewire 800 cable. Found one plugged it in on one end. Went to plug in the other other end and no go. WTF? Turns out it was a Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 cable. I didn't remember there was such a thing. Had to go to the next box to find FW800 to FW800. Any reason to keep this laptop: Mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro 2.26 GHz Core 2 duo 2 GB Ram 160 GB HDD Currently on Yosemite It needs a new battery. It looks like I can get a new battery, 8 GB RAM and a 250 GB SSD for a little over $200.00 Everymac says El Capitan is the as far as it is supported. I inherited this machine and don't really need it. Time to recycle? Steve

How old of backups do need? If you just need to restore your Mac to where it was when you had problem (HDD failure etc.) or you deleted a recently changed file, maybe just let TM do its thing and delete old backups? Steve

When I got my first laptop, I forced myself to use the track pad. It took awhile to get used to it, but now I can switch back and forth between mouse and trackpad. My MIL was abel to get used to a trackpad, but my Mom could never get her MacBook Pro to click. It wan't the track pad, it worked fine for me. So to each their own. Steve

I recently did this for my 2012 Mini. I got this drive from our sponsor. OWC Envoy USB 3.0 . I got the 1TB. I was doing this to have a clean install of Catalina. I migrated every thing from a Time Machine Back up. It works great. I should be able to get a few more years out of this rig. i can still boot into High Sierra on the Internal drive if i need it. I just didi the same thing this weekend, except 8 GB Ram and an external SSD. So far so so good. I would try reseating the ram if you are having kernel panics. Its an easy first step. Steve
