I think it is a small part of the overall rescue package. It is good news in that GM must think it will not need more cash in the next year or two. When they did the deal, there was a fairly short term cash repayment--which is what they are returning- plus a few kinds of equity. The equity will be repaid when GM thinks it can return to the stock market.by numbered - 'Friendly' Political Ranting

I think the story is that the drought will be with us always... This last set of storms will bring the Sierra up above average for the year. The State hesitates to call the drought over because: --three years of "overdrafts" have left reservoirs--particularly Oroville--very low --San Joaquin Valley farmers have been pumping groundwater like mad. This means the valley floor suby numbered - Tips and Deals

There are ways to flash most firmware using a Mac. The problem may be the router. Tomato supports older versions of the WRT54GS (v1-4) but not the newer hardware. Check the version number of your router before you leap. Tomato is hereby numbered - Tips and Deals

Jeff, Thanks for the reply. The case has an IDE interface. I shopped for older PATA drives, and they are increasingly scarce. Still available, but the price/performance trend is not good. I thought I would move to SATA. I did see a few IDE-to-SATA connectors but I don't think they would fit in the case...by numbered - Tips and Deals
My wife recently changed from using a Firewire external drive for Time Machine to a USB SATA dock. (The FW drive started making sounds that were not pleasant...). The problem is that with the new setup she gets a Device Error message on wake from sleep (the 'remember to eject before you unplug' type). No data lost, no problems so far. It does cause a disturbance in the Force, however. (Meby numbered - Tips and Deals
The AT&T network has its biggest problems in NY and SF. Remember that in NY they stopped sales for a period. User surveys suggest that AT&T is struggling with data provision. The iPad might actually function! Yeah, without LTE, the iPad is doomed. What a maroon. Gimme a break. This article from ars suggests that the problem with AT&T is not really network capacity so much as it is configuration. Apple's choices to maintain battery life by having each data session disconnect, then reconnect means that the signaling channel is overloaded by constant refresh requests. The thing that made the difference for our 13 year old guy was Deramaxx , a non-steroidal anti-inflamatory. It is prescription only so has to come from the vet and needs to be monitored for liver/kidney issues. He is getting G&C as well, but the difference on the drug is remarkable: from not wanting to move to wanting to chase the ever-present tennis ball again. New claims for unemployment rose slightly (5k). Market had expected a decline based on the GDP growth number, which was surprisingly high. The problem is that quite a bit of the GDP increase went into inventories. And companies are using the productivity gains (more GDP with fewer workers) to boost profits rather than hire. We still have a ways to go to get out of the swamp.by numbered - Tips and Deals
I wonder if the camera was held back from the initial release because of AT&T? Local use is one thing, but immediately enabling ichat and Skype video might very well have turned the whole country into SF and NY.by numbered - Tips and Deals
I think Guy Gene has it right, it is important to consider the iBooks app. While I agree with some of the above criticism, I suspect that the Kindle is what caused The Leader to be willing to consider the iPad. Changing the book business model is a big part of the story. Remember how fast the first generation of Kindle sold out--and at a price point close to the iPad. I know the consensus here is that PP (and fleabay) sides with buyers. But there are plenty of experiences with bad sellers that give pause. I had a case where the seller did not have the item, sent me something else to get a shipping confirmation, and lied to me. I shipped it back, tracked, and he denied receiving it. The Bay Area really does not want to break the Alaska record. Most of the forecasts I have seen for the San Andreas/Hayward/Calaveras structure suggest that an 8 is our worst case. (Alaska was a 9; 1906 was a 7.9 according to estimates.) The forecasting is actually pretty detailed in terms of likely damage. (e.g., a repeat of 1906 on the Hayward might destroy 160k houses.) One site that is a reasonable place to start is Consumersearch. They collect reviews from a variety of sources (e.g., Consumer Reports) and make recommendations. They sometimes fall behind in fast moving areas of electronics, but they are a good first step. That said, mattresses are a real problem for any review. The manufacturers purposely make it difficult to compare. They create specifiby numbered - Tips and Deals
Here is a handy chart showing the ratio of record highs to record lows in the last several decades. Kinda don't like the direction. But it illustrates that you have to look at large amounts of data to discern trends, and not look at your current temp. It is very interesting to me to watch the skepticism about global warming (GW). The physics of CO2 trapping heat are not disputed. The direcby numbered - 'Friendly' Political Ranting
Here is the scoop. Verizon's 3G technology (also used by Sprint), called EV-DO, has been rolled out over a number of years. Almost every Verizon tower now supplies EV-DO. (Verizon also provides an earlier data standard 1xRTT.) AT&T's 3G is called HSPA and is a newer standard. It can be faster if the signal is sufficient. HSPA also can be used while a voice call is in progress. Howeveby numbered - Tips and Deals
The key uncertainty in the forecast for 2015 is the extent to which we will have competition in our internet access. For the past several years regulators were willing to have a duopoly (cable or phone company) providing most of the service, though they talked about wireless and other options.
