I'm not at all surprised that the $250 I spent on a DVD-RW in 2004 may have been an inflated price, particularly since I got its replacement in 2010 for about 10% of that.

I stalled mine once when hitting a brick accidentally. No evidence for damage, though. I've accidentally run over branches (about an inch or so thick) without stalling it. I wonder if they took into account the lost income tax, increased disability payouts, and the expensive strain on emergency departments that eventually makes its way down to grab the wallets of those who can afford insurance.

In the '90s, I borrowed a Honda Civic that scraped the road at the bottom of moderate hills. I rented a Civic hatchback that scraped every speed bump in my apartment complex. I'm not a fan of "hugging the road." It's not practical.

That is so freakin' cool! Low End Mac has an article on adapting a modern SLA battery to use with the Macintosh Portable. Nuts! The battery they mention is as available as the original Mac Portable battery - in other words, not at all. A SCSI2SD adapter will let you use SD cards with SCSI Macs. An Asante EN/SC mini 10T (not the PowerBook version) will give you ethernet access.

I used Sophos for a while, followed by Kaspersky and then by Norton. Sophos was the least objectionable, but any real-time antivirus on my late 2008 MBP seems to tax it quite heavily.

I've also had difficulty with a C2D MBP (late 2008) with the same general setup getting progressively sluggish with Mavericks and later OS's. I have a backup (thanks to Carbon Copy Cloner) of a fresh installation of Mavericks on a flash drive, and use Carbon Copy Cloner to reinstall it when that happens. I have yet to determine a reason for the sluggishness. If I had the funds, I'd upgrade the
