Not to beat a dead horse but you’re the one who decided to move to Sonoma on a computer not designed for it. My M1 and M2 minis are doing just fine with HFS+ data drives including several WD drives. At this point you have nothing to lose, other than some time, by putting Catalina back on the internal drive and seeing whether the older OS will recognize the externals.by PeterW - Tips and Deals

Robert - right now Jerry has two 2TB drives that are useless. Even if they are encrypted, if all you want to do is format them, then putting them in a non-WD enclosure should enable you to do so. You are right that you cannot get to the existing data on the drives but you can still use them after formatting. I’m no fan of WD but if it’s all you’ve got, you make do.by PeterW - Tips and Deals

Any enclosure can be opened. It may not be reusable but it can be opened. The drives didn’t grow in there. Question for T: were those WD drives with the usb connectors permanently attached 2.5” or 3.5” drives?by PeterW - Tips and Deals

Get rid of the hub for now. Plug in nothing but the keyboard, mouse and boot drive. Plug in the 2TB HD. What happens? Unplug the 2TB and plug in the 1TB HD. What happens now?iby PeterW - Tips and Deals

1. Your music and photo libraries take up only 250 GB. What’s taking up the rest? You need to prune before making any more plans. And leave them on the boot drive regardless of the OS. 2. Don’t make any plans for the internal hd. 3. Have you got the logic board removal tool to get the mini’s board out of the case? It does not just slide out.by PeterW - Tips and Deals
