Given your budget, the first ssd you linked to will do fine. You will need to install one of the ssd’s inside the mini as you have only one enclosure. While you’re at it, reseat your RAM.

A TM restore doesn’t have to be an all or nothing proposition. Click on Go Back and deselect enough until it will restore. Then see what you can prune so you can get everything you need on the ssd vs the entire backup.

Only go to Catalina if you are sure you have no 32 bit software that is important to you. Mojave is the last OS that can run those programs. So your next question is how to tell 32 bit apps from 64 bit versions. You need to install an OS first and then restore your backup. Get that far and we’ll talk.

The TM backup is OS agnostic. Of course, anything that really requires a later OS won’t run but they will be few and far between. Run your restore and put your programs through their paces.

Don’t get stuck. Is the SATA connecter unplugged? If so, button it back up and use the SSD externally. You can worry about microseconds of difference later, after the mini is working again.

Remove the screws holding the antenna plate and push it out of the way. (You don’t have to disconnect the antenna connector) Remove the screw holding the plastic piece on the left hand side of the mini and set it aside

Yeah, the drive is actually compatible. But that’s not here nor there. Step one is get rid of the existing hard drive. Once it’s gone, you can either get an internal drive like black suggested or the external like Robert M posted. But get the internal disconnected first.

Yeah, your internal drive is toast. It is after all 12 years old. What it’s doing is filling the SATA channel with garbage when the computer tries to read from it leading to all the beach balls. Feel competent enough to remove it from your mini because it’s going to have to come out.

A TM backup drive won’t have an OS installed unless you put one there. Otherwise it’s just a data drive.
