And unless your topsoil has the consistency of modeling clay, there’s nothing that will cut a layer of it. The machine you’re thinking of is a sod cutter that cuts the sod just below its roots. Topsoil shouldn’t hold together in the same way.

We have two institutions handling our 401ks, Fidelity and Vanguard. Fidelity only needs a few mouse clicks and the RMD is on its way; Vanguard requires a phone call. Not sure which we prefer but neither requires any fuss. If you do decide to move your account, just make sure you don’t get your hot little hands on it during the transfer. Taxes on the whole amount become due if that happens.

Are you on city/county water or got a well? We had similar sediment problems until we got a sand bed filter for our well water supply. It auto backflushes every night and hasn’t needed any maintenance in over eight years now. Probably fit right between the new hwh and that water softener.
