If Hillary ran for VP and lost, she would be in no good position for a run in 2016. If she retires from State, builds an organization, and a new Republican administration botches things up, she's in a pretty good position. If Obama wins again and has a decent 4 years, she's in a pretty good position. I think semi-retiring and getting tanned and rested is her best choice if she wants to run for president.
