I go by the old maxim that you don't need to trot out a conspiracy theory when simple incompetence explains something. In this case, the incompetence is the belief held by a lot of right wingers that most Americans agree with them. Their logic is something along these lines -- if I can't imagine it being any different, then it can't be any different -- In other words, they feel so deeply that they are right that bullying everyone who disagrees and everyone who is a political opponent is normal to them.
The fact that it's not normal to the rest of us is beyond them. Since they express this attitude pretty much every waking hour, it is predictable that at some point, they will say something that catches the attention of the media and the rest of the country. Fluke was just one possibility among many -- there are lots of baited hooks out there, even if Democrats don't intentionally think of them as baited hooks -- and some of them are going to get swallowed. Santorum's political suicide note in which he said the JFK's speech made him want to throw up is just one more. Gingrich is a serial fluker. Only Romney seems to have tried to avoid this trap, but in trying to compete with the crazies for the nomination, he is taking some chances that will presumably come back to bite him. |
