Are wristwatches really big now or what?

I have large wrists and hands - I've always worn large watches - Seiko early on, Omega for years, larger size Apple watches the last few years.

Ditto. Or was until about 20 years ago when the aging nerves took an extreme dislike to anything remotely watch-like on ye olde wrist. Have a "drop in the bucket compared to Grumpyguy" collection of Seiko chronographs, starting w/ one of their original autowinders. Sadly, now that I could/would definitely benefit from Apple Watch tech, it's no longer an option. Big(-ish) Watches Rule!

Seems like 95% of men’s watches are 40mm or larger. That seems big to me. Is this a phase?

No, it's not a fad or phase, in that there have been several watches in the ~40mm range for decades.

The 50mm and bigger sizes have been around for at least a decade, close to two.

I don't care for watches that big, but some people like them.

One advantage is that they're often much easier to read, and that makes those wearers happy.

There will always be people who like to mock other people's choices, just like mocking people who drive pickup trucks as compensating for a little Dick, wearing AirPods, etc.

Differences intimidates a lot of people.

If 95% of the watches you're seeing are 40mm or bigger, you're looking in all the wrong places.

It might just be a personal preference?

my wife, all 5' 3" of her has always worn big watches, even before the AW.
