How about "ridge" ???would you want to spell it rige?

Generally speaking (not always, of course, this IS the English language we are discussing) A vowel followed by a consonant and another vowel is pronounced with the "long" sound, and if followed by two consonants is pronounced with the "short" sound—think of mite and Mitt, bite and bit.
So "frige" could be seen as being pronounced "fr-eye-ge" although that really sounds clumsy. The phonetic spelling clears up the matter of pronunciation while the phonetic sound obfuscates the matter of spelling.

I thought my husband was the only person on the planet who spelled it "frige"!
I vote for the "ridge-bridge-fridge" explanation. In a world where Peggy is a nickname for Margaret and Jack is a nickname for John, the "d" doesnt really seem all that mysterious to me.

It's official, per Wiki:
"William Anthony Perry (born December 16, 1962) is a former American college and professional football player who was a defensive lineman in the National Football League (NFL) for ten seasons during the 1980s and 1990s. Perry played college football for Clemson University, and was recognized as an All-American. He was selected in the first round of the 1985 NFL Draft, and played professionally for the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL. In reference to his large size, he was popularly known as "The Refrigerator" or, abbreviated, "The Fridge"." ![]() |
